Sure, anybody can buy a small cup at their local grocery store for less than $1, but not everybody has time to. When your rushing to work in the AM, you do want to think about how to save the extra $.50 or so, but what you can satify your hunger quick and easy.

One great way is yogurt. Yogurt is one my favorite quick breakfast because it’s fast, easy, and the flavor combinations are endless. At the cafe level, it can prove to be super popular and profitable. Using 1883 syrups, a once boring breakfast can be excitingly flavorful. Raspberry-Vanilla Yogurt with no sugar added is a great way to kick off your day…

Here’s a little cost analysis: It’s about $4 for 32oz tub of Organic Plain Yogurt (that’s a high estimate and it’s organic. Regular plain yogurt will be much less) making it $.13/oz. For 8oz cups and lids, we’ll estimate $.10 and for flavor, $.20 for 3/4 of an ounce of syrup(on the high side). A total product cost for this little delight is $1.21. Pair it with a banana ($.20) and 2oz cup of granola ($.15). This complete breakfast package can easily sell at $3.25 and make it a combo with a medium cup of coffee for $4.50. That’s a healthy start of the day for under $5 including tax.

Pre-made yogurt cups can easily keep for 2-3 days if under proper refrigeration and gives your counter staff something to do during the down time. Be sure to always use the weight scale to be accurate on the portion size and to keep expected profits coming in. Here’s the recipe:

Raspberry-Vanilla Yogurt

7oz Plain Low Fat Yogurt

1/2 oz 1883 Sugar Free Vanilla Syrup

1/4 oz 1883 Sugar Free Raspberry Syrup

Combine all ingredients into cup. Stir and enjoy!

At any one moment, there can be at least 4-10 different issues that require your attention whether it’s a broken piece of hardware, an employee calling in sick, ran out of napkins, or a natural disaster, your customers expect the same great service day in and day out, which is what they deserve. Most customers understand that mistakes happen and as managers the art of recovery is what can make that customer, a customer for life.

Issues and mistakes that arise give you the opportunity to show your customers exactly what you’re made of and prove to them the value of the service they are getting. It’s all about going above and beyond the customer’s expectations to really seal the deal. For example, a customer is given a beverage that was not made to their specifications and most cafes will apologize and make them another drink to their exact order- which I feel is expected. Someone made a mistake and it’s corrected. Done. Now think as if you’re the customer and after you received the beverage asked for, you received a voucher for a drink the next day. I, personally, would be ecstatic for a free drink. For, at most $5, you inched a customer to become a customer for life. What’s the lifetime value of a customer again?

SP Coffee Blends by singaporepoly on Flickr.

They giveaway 1000 free items every time they open a new store to let people know that they’re there, which in New York even if 1000’s of people walk by your shop on a daily basis, you still need to standout and make your shop known. Sampling is a cheap and easy way to have potential customers try your awesome products or have current customers try something new.

Be sure to actively promote your sampling either on social networks, a chalkboard in the front of your store, or one of your team members interacting with customers and soon to be customers. As with any type of marketing or promotion, you need to tell people about it or you’re setting yourself up for lackluster results. For example, my customer in NY promotes actively on twitter and facebook, which works great since it’s practically free and in an office dense environment it only takes one follower to bring in 2-10 more people.

Once you hook them in for their free sample, they might be in the mood for coffee, water, or snack and now know where you are and what items you offer. Making people aware can be costly, but sampling is a cheaper alternative than traditional ad’s or coupons. I mean who doesn’t like a free sample?
